Formula 1 George Russell won’t sign new Mercedes contract during summer break George Russell / Gettyimages By Kasper Christensen 6. August 2025 Mercedes F1 While rivals are locking in their driver line-ups, Russell is sticking to his own pace. George Russell is in the midst of his strongest Formula 1 season to date, yet he refuses to be pressured into signing a new contract with Mercedes. Despite claiming victory in Canada and earning a total of six podium finishes in 2025 so far, Russell is in no rush. His current contract expires at the end of the season, but the 27-year-old Brit insists that no decision will be made before the summer break is over. “I’m heading straight off on holiday and just need ten days of peace and quiet,” he said after the race in Hungary. “There’s no reason to rush things – not for me, and not for the team.” Traditionally, the summer break is when many contracts are finalized, but this year, Russell is making it clear that such discussions will have to wait. He plans to use the break to recharge – not to negotiate his future. For Russell, it’s not just about salary or sponsor obligations. He wants a deal that makes sense from a sporting, strategic, and long-term perspective. Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen has shifted the dynamic Talks with Russell have grown more complex since Mercedes approached Max Verstappen earlier this year. Although the Dutchman has since confirmed his commitment to Red Bull, the fact that contact was made hasn’t gone unnoticed – and it’s affected the team dynamic. According to Sky Sports, Russell has described the past six months as “conflict-ridden” due to Mercedes exploring alternative options. Russell has been part of Mercedes’ development program since 2017 and came up through their junior ranks. That makes the situation particularly unusual, as his management team is also the one negotiating his contract. “They hold the cards,” he said in Hungary. “There was never a suggestion I’d lose my seat – but that doesn’t mean it’s all been comfortable.” Team principal Toto Wolff has previously stated that both Russell and teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli should have clarity about their futures by the end of the summer. In reality, nothing has been finalized – and perhaps that’s why Russell is holding his cards even closer to his chest. A new era awaits With major regulation changes set for 2026 and uncertainty over how the competitive order will shake out, Russell wants as much control over his future as possible. Mercedes is expected to be strong – but nothing is guaranteed. And if Verstappen becomes available in 2027, Russell could find himself in a vulnerable position if he signs a short-term deal. “I’ve waited 12 months already. I’m not rushing into anything in two weeks,” said the Brit. “It has to be the right decision for both sides.” Still, Toto Wolff has made it clear that Russell is highly valued: “George has always held a strong hand. He’s delivering, and he did it again here in Budapest.” According to Russell, the question isn’t if he’ll stay with Mercedes, but when and how. And that is exactly why no decision will be made during the break. Share article Where do you want to share?
