Marcus Rashford was encouraged by his teammates to step away from a confrontation with
Manchester United supporters while warming up before their 3-2 victory over Newcastle United.
In a video posted on social media, a remark from someone in the home end prompted an angry reaction from Rashford. He seemed to respond with a scowl and mouthed something back at the heckler.
Christian Eriksen and captain Bruno Fernandes intervened, urging the 27-year-old to calm down and guiding him away from the situation before it escalated.
The clip was condemned as "vile" by social media users outraged by seeing one of their own players verbally attacked before a game.
Rashford has had a troubled season, having been disciplined for missing training after being spotted on a late night out in Belfast, and soon after losing form. This led to increased criticism, prompting him to publicly request an end to the personal attacks, insisting "enough is enough."
Rashford, who has also been booed by United fans this season, came on as a second-half substitute against Newcastle and was cheered onto the pitch. However, his loss of form has been evident and concerning.
This means the former United Academy player, once a favorite of the Old Trafford crowd, is now unlikely to be selected for England at this summer’s European Championships.
Telegraph Sport also reported that United would be open to selling the player, who has scored only eight goals this season and has consistently delivered underwhelming performances.
